Roxy has been dancing with FireTribe, Cape Towns top fire performance troupe, for the past 5 years. She is also an Artist and is currently doing her Masters in Fine Art at UJ. She is passionate about teaching and has run many classes in the Arts.
If you are absolutely new to poi spinning or would like to improve your basic skills then these classes are for you.
Each poi class will include a warm up and movement exploration as well as trick and technique development. We aim to make you familiar with weaves, butterflies, reels, corkscrews and buzzsaws - at the very least.
The beginner classes ensure each student gets a firm grasp on the basic moves and techniques. We’ll also help you develop a good understanding of the theory behind them and how to create a flow with them. The classes do not involve any fire. Practice equipment is available to borrow for the first class after which you will need to bring your own practice poi, we have available to buy.
Poi is a movement art that involves spinning tethered weight around the body in a variety of rhythmical and geometric patterns. It is a form of object manipulation that incorporates elements of dance, circus skills and performance art.
There are many different types of poi props including fire poi, LED poi and ribbon poi.
Learning to move and dance with poi is a highly rewarding skill. It will help you develop upper body strength, full body co-ordination, balance spatial awareness and rhythm. Of course the ultimate reward, after a bit of training, is setting your poi on fire and learning to master the art of fire dancing.
